Guesthouse facilities are not standardized. A listing may mention a kitchen, laundry, breakfast, Wi-Fi or luggage storage, but the useful question is how each facility works for your dates and room.
Start with essentials, not a feature count
List the facilities that could change your stay: bathroom arrangement, heating or cooling, secure luggage space, laundry access, kitchen rules and late-arrival access. Confirm them in the current property description and ask before booking if the answer affects your decision.
| Facility | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Bathroom | Private or shared, location, number of users and towel policy |
| Kitchen | Guest access hours, cooking rules, refrigerator space and cleanup |
| Laundry | Self-service or staff-run, cost, detergent and drying method |
| Luggage storage | Available before check-in or after checkout, staffed or unattended |
| Wi-Fi | Coverage in the room, not only in the common area |
| Climate control | Individual or central operation and seasonal availability |
Shared kitchen and lounge
A shared kitchen can be valuable for a longer stay, but “kitchen available” does not say whether full cooking is allowed. Check opening hours, labeling rules, storage space and whether cookware is provided. For lounges, compare the atmosphere you want with quiet-hour rules and the distance between social space and sleeping rooms.
Laundry, towels and drying
Do not assume that a washing machine means free, anytime use. Some properties schedule laundry, charge per load or offer no dryer. In humid weather, the drying method can matter as much as the machine. Confirm whether towels are supplied, exchanged or rented.
Security and luggage
For dorms, check the size and locking method of storage rather than relying on the word “locker.” For private rooms, ask how the building and room are accessed. If you arrive before check-in or leave after checkout, confirm the luggage-storage window and who supervises the bags.
Accessibility and stairs
An elevator icon does not describe the whole route. Check steps at the entrance, lift access to the room, bathroom layout, door widths and the walking route from the nearest station. Contact the property with specific requirements before paying a non-refundable rate.
Breakfast and small extras
Archived pages from the former business advertised breakfast, drinks, internet and other amenities. Those claims are historical and must not be treated as current. For any present-day guesthouse, verify what is actually included for your rate and dates.
A quick pre-booking checklist
- Is the bathroom private, shared or outside the room?
- Can you access the building at your planned arrival time?
- Is luggage storage available when you need it?
- Are laundry and kitchen use included, restricted or charged?
- Does Wi-Fi reach the room?
- Are heating and cooling controlled in the room?
- Are stairs or the final walk a problem with luggage?
